COVID-19 has posed some interesting opportunities for education. For me, staying connected with students and families was a top priority during this time of uncertainty and unease. Our district provided distance learning almost entirely online. I became familiar with the screen-recording program Loom as well as how to best utilize Google Classroom with primary students. I hosted weekly Google Meets with my students and it was truly special to see them connect online using the same strategies we learned in class. We used this time to catch up, share, and ask questions. It filled my heart to watch them interact!
We began each week with a Monday Message to regroup and maintain our sense of community.
For all first-grade students, I developed the ELA teaching videos as well as the ELA activities. Each week followed a similar schedule with a main literary focus, sight words, and phonics being introduced strategically.
Redmond School District developed an outline for all elementary classrooms. All learning plans can be found HERE at the Engage Redmond Website.
Distance Learning opened so many doors for communication with families. Through Remind and email, we were able to communicate quickly and authentically as we tried to figure out this new way of learning together.
Google Classroom was an everyday part of our classroom before schools were closed, and it became even more essential after the closure. As my students were already familiar with it, my first-graders were able to help their parents learn to navigate our site.
Letters and postcards became a positive way to let my students and families know that I was still there for them regardless of online access.
