A Japanese word meaning the balance between light and dark.
An art form involving papercutting and positive and negative shapes.
Notans uses the two elements of art: SHAPE and LINE.
Open a new A4 size (or 8.5 x 11) white canvas.
Select the "rectangle" shape and draw a black rectangle on the canvas.
Draw a square shape in black. Copy, paste and change the fill to white. Use the SELECT (arrow) tool to move the shapes in place.
Keep adding geometric shapes to create your own unique Notan artwork!
Challenge yourself:
Create a symmetrical Notan in black and white. (P3 to create one symmetrical and one asymmetrical Notan in black and white)
Create an asymmetrical Notan in complementary colours. (P4-5)
