At the end of this topics, students will be able to
Identify and describe the functions of the primary components of a computer.
Identify the characteristics of various classes of single-user and multiuser computer system, and discuss the usage of each class of system
Identify and briefly describe the functions of two basic kinds of software
Define the term “sphere of influence,” and describe how it can be used to classify software
Define the basic functions performed by the operating system, utility programs, and middleware
Telecommunication is one of the components of information system. Nonetheless, telecommunication involve the use of hardware and software as well which I think is worth mentioning in this lesson. The image on the left shows a list of network devices.
We already know what server is. But there are other networking devices i.e hardware that you should know. You might know some of these devices such as cable and router. You connect your computer or devices to other device using cables. Router, which I think what do you have now in your house connects your device to the Internet.
A hub amplifies the signal that pass through it. Think of it like an extension power cable. Your phone needs to be charge but the charger cable is just too short to the plug. So, you would use a power cable. Same anology with the hub
Switch is the central connection point. When one device sends a message (in a form of a frame) the another device, the switch will know where to send it to based on the port and the MAC address. It also amplifies the signal like a hub does. The difference between a hub and a switch is that the hub is not as intelligent as the switch. Hub just amplifies the signal that comes into it and connects the devices.
Obviously, for all these devices to work (except for Cables), there should be a software that accompanies for it to work efficiently.
