Using exhibitions at the National Museum of African American History & Culture, we will explore the second mindset discussed in Ron Ritchhart's latest book, Cultures of Thinking in Action ("We can’t teach dispositions, we must enculturate them"). Using sketchnoting, thinking routines and making, we will dive into the concept of enculturation in our increasingly complex global society.
During the 2023-2024 School year I had the pleasure of co-leading a Professional Learning Community (PLC) in the exploration of the book Cultures of Thinking In Action, 10 Mindsets to Transform our teaching and Students' learning by Ron Ritchhart. The goal of the cohort was monthly meetings to explore individual mindsets presented in the book, reflect on their application and plan for integration in our teaching. This cohort of educators is very experienced with with Project Zero pedagogy and this was reflected throughout our time together this year. Led by their passionate principal, Gerald D. Smith, Jr, this learning community is committed to cultivating a culture of thinking with their scholars.
Co-Facilitator, Sher Anderson Petty, MCPS Educator | Special Guest: Augie, PSD.
PLCs are coordinated by The Professional Development Collaborative.
In this hands-on interactive engagement we will explore the uses of photography in the classroom to create photo essays as stories of learning and thinking.
Looking and seeing are different.
How do we craft and present visual images for universal storytelling? How are the universal principles of design applied in photography? Using design thinking participants will learn the fundamentals of documentary photography; consider power, participation and design with photography; and, learn how to present their photographs for effective storytelling.
Come with us to engage with the past, present, and future and follow the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) director Kevin Young's advice to "imagine a better [world]," by exploring the museum's exhibition Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures.
Participants will experience the Smithsonian’s Pillars for Framing Systemic Racism along with Project Zero thinking routines from Arts as Civic Commons to examine the concept of afrofuturism and imagine new worlds. In this experience we will reimagine, reinterpret, and reclaim our present to inform--and realize--our dreams for more empowering educational experiences for learners and for ourselves.
Description: This session will begin with Julie Carmean sharing some thoughts on the thinking disposition of making connections and how this disposition builds a bridge from the artwork to our own lives, our communities, and our world. Following her remarks, Kerri Redding will share examples of thinking dispositions in action in her media literacy high school class, illustrating how finding complexity leads to opportunities for connection making. Next, participants will be led through an interactive art experience that strengthens the thinking disposition, making connections. The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A with a panel of researcher-scholar Shari Tishman, classroom educator Kerri Redding, and museum educator Julie Carmean.
National Gallery of Art Online Summer Institute for Educators: Art and Thinking
Description: In this interactive course (AKA: Teaching the Fish About Water), we will explore the examination and creation of digital media as a catalyst to make thinking visible and engage in challenging or difficult conversations while teaching in person, online or in a hybrid learning environment. Focusing on the use of photographs, video, and film, as creators or consumers, we will explore how to scaffold a challenging conversation using thinking routines in multiple learning environments. We will examine commercial media, and we will scaffold the process of student-generated media. This course is useful for those who would like to use the consumption and/or the creation of media to make thinking visible as part of a culture of thinking, encouraging creativity and maker thinking in children.
