After college I wedged my foot in the magazine industry's door and gained experience at all kinds of writing — long articles, short articles, one-pagers, snappy front-of-the-book stuff, headlines, sub-headlines, interviews, columns, editorials, captions, etc.
I got involved in marketing when a friend asked if I'd moonlight writing product and brand copy for his company. Six months later he offered me a full-time job. I accepted!
Almost everything I learned in publishing has been invaluable to my marketing career: How to write well under pressure and juggle multiple assignments. The difference between editing and line-editing, and how to do both. How to conduct a proper interview. Research skills. Collaboration skills. Leadership skills.
My design skills were born of the need for speed. I realized I could get content finished faster if I could design as well as write. Drawing, painting and photography are hobbies of mine, so I understood composition. From there it was learning how to use the right tools in the Adobe Creative Suite, plus apps like Figma and Canva.
I've learned this about marketing content: Keep your stories clear, concise and convincing. Take time to find the right words and string them together in fluid, easy-to-read sentences. Do that and your message stands a fighting chance of being absorbed and remembered.
I live in a southern California beach town, San Clemente. Away from the keyboard I like to draw, paint, play guitar, play golf (check my resume and you'll see I've spent a lot of time working in the golf industry), explore new music, walk the dog, read, watch movies, follow sports, carve pumpkins, collect California fruit crate labels, and run.
I once brought my dog to work for a video shoot. Here we're listening to the director describe the day's schedule. I believe Fritz is paying closer attention than I am...
I took an intensive course on UX design in which I learned to use Figma. So far I've had a lot of fun designing Facebook and Instagram posts like these for the San Juan Capistrano chapter of the Rotary Club, for whom I handle social media. I'm not a member, but I have several friends who are. Rotary does a lot of good for people in need, so I'm glad to help.
