Identify the part(s) of your plan you were able to implement (give the nature of leadership work, your project may actually continue beyond submission of your Capstone Portfolio).
I was able to create and implement a structured recess. There was one support staff that consistently showed up to our structured recess. She regularly met to debrief about structured recess.
How successful was your action plan at addressing the challenge?
My action plan did address the challenge but I did change from a book study to a debrief with support staff. I was able to adapt the plan to meet the needs of the support staff.
Which stakeholders and association practice or program were impacted?
MBI team, preschool teacher, neighborhood counsel, support staff
How do you know (site evidence)?
Neighborhood counsel invited my class to participate in a community book walk at a community park near the school. Our classroom received recognition from local television networks and the radio. I received Gold Star recognition by support staff member.
How were your four chosen competencies used in the implementation of your project?
The four competencies were used throughout the entire project and continue to ground my project and keep me on track with my goals.
What obstacles, if any, did you encounter? How did you address them?
The obstacle that I encountered was one support staff not wanting to participate and engage with my class and our structured recess. She asked and was moved to a different grade level so that she did not have to engage with my students. I spoke to my administrator, together we agreed that it was best for my students not to have to engage with that support staff member in the school.
Given the outcomes, describe any changes you might make to the Capstone Project's action plan.
I would make sure that I took more pictures and saved emails throughout the project.
One of the support staff members nominated me to a Gold Star. I was given this recognition by my administrator with my students present. I think that the support staff member that consistently came to my structured recess time was positivity impacted by the resilience of my students.
I attended a neighborhood council meeting and from that my class was asked to participate in a book walk. All of my students were assigned parts. Together with the intervention teacher and the librarian, the students were recorded. At the local park, patrons could scan a QR code and hear my students read a book. It was a great way to have our school and my students recognized in a positive way in the community.
The story boards were created by the public library. Many park patrons walked and listened to the 4th grade read a story.
I had the chance to go to the park and listen to my students read the book. I am grateful for the opportunity to have my students featured on this book walk.
Student data
I collected and examined all the Lunch Learning Opportunities (LLO), Tune Up, and Office Referrals. I think that there could have been more of each category but after March the LLO were down significantly.
