Dear Keck Science Community,
We, the DEI Committee of the Keck Science Department, recognize that statements of solidarity with affected students at Pitzer College in the last week have appropriately come from student groups. However, we are cognizant that the Keck student group most appropriate to speak in solidarity with our Latinx, immigrant, DACAmented, and undocumented students is our SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) Chapter. Unfortunately, our SACNAS Chapter needs to be reorganized in the wake of the pandemic, as the former student leadership has graduated.
As members of the DEI Committee, we specifically commit our organizational capacity and resources to supporting our students in re-establishing a vibrant SACNAS Chapter here at Keck and/or the 5Cs, as the organization plays an important role in our community.
We want to unequivocally state that hate speech rhetoric, anti-Mexican language, anti-immigrant language, and dehumanizing language lead to policies that oppress these groups and have no place in our community or in science.
For students affected by these incidents, we urge you to take advantage of the resources listed below.
