Kilrush Community School is a very progressive institute of learning, located in West Clare. We offer a wide range of opportunities to our students in our Junior and Leaving Certificate programmes, our Leaving Certificate Applied programme, Transition Year Programme and our Post Leaving Certificate course. Students with Special Educational Needs are also enabled to participate in a broad curriculum with their peers in a supportive, inclusive environment. Each year 60 to 70 percent of our students enter either the Universities or the Institutes of Technology, while other KCS graduates progress to apprenticeships or PLCs. Our school building is modern and well maintained and we have a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all our students.
Our school motto is “Ní neart go cur le chéile”, which means : There is strength in unity. We aim to encourage our students to work together with all staff, to reach their full potential and develop as good students.
Being a Community School, KCS places major emphasis on positive engagement between homes, school and our community. We encourage parents’ involvement in their child’s education and would assure parents of a welcoming reception to discuss their child’s progress.
KCS has adapted well to Online Learning and much progress was made during lockdown by teachers and students, using Microsoft Teams to produce lessons and complete assignments. Back in the classroom we continue to use overhead projectors and whiteboards to support teaching and learning. Students also have access to three networked computer rooms.
KCS offers a wide range of subjects at all levels. At Junior Cycle students can choose all the core subjects and a language, either French or German. There are also 2 option subjects to choose from. At Senior Cycle we offer all 4 Science subjects, business and accounting, engineering, construction and DCG. This year, we have introduced P.E. as a Leaving Certificate subject. L.C.A. offers a great opportunity to students to continue learning and progress to 3rd level along a different path to the Leaving Cert. programme. At this level students study a variety of subjects, including Spanish, Vocational Preparation, Visual Art, Mathematical Applications, ICT, Technology & Social Education.
We provide a school lunch program to all students providing a variety of fresh rolls and sandwiches free of charge. All dietary needs are catered for Gluten Free fresh rolls are available every day. Unlimited fresh fruit is available all day free of charge from the canteen. Purified water is also available from the water container areas. There is a tuck shop that sells treats and juice during break times. Kilrush Community School promotes a healthy eating program for all our students.
A book rental scheme is also available to help parents with return to school costs.
