Ethan Brown thought that he had everything set right. He was top of his class, he obeyed all the laws of the Nationals, and he made it past the Intelligence Test. Curiosity got the best of Ethan. What happened to those who didn't pass? He knew they got sent to Release, but nobody really knew what Release was. He wanted to know if the stories about the cannibals were true. His curiosity drags him to the other side, showing him what happens in Release. Does he reveal the secrets that the Nationals kept hidden for years?

Prologue
To my classmate who said only the smartest people should live because there would be no problems if only the smartest survived.
Lamark thought the same way you did only for Darwin to prove him wrong.
My turn.
“You are absolutely crazy. You shouldn’t poke around where you don’t belong!”
That is what my mom would say if she could see where I was right now. I’m probably the only kid in the world that has done something this bad. Now don’t judge me! I was just curious. Like they say, “Curiosity killed the cat.” But there’s one thing about that saying that everyone forgets. There’s a second part to it. So yes curiosity is about to get me killed, but satisfaction will hopefully bring me back.
I just don’t want to die.
I’m usually a good kid. I followed everything the Nationals had told us to do, I obeyed my parents, and I was top of my class at school. I was doing everything right. I even studied all of Doctor Ethan Cook Owens’ theories and discoveries. He was Earth’s hero. He was my hero, but I learned the truth. He created something called ECO’s theory of Perfection. That’s what saved our world.
ECO’s theory of Perfection is centered around the idea that the world would be perfected if only the smartest and best people survived. In the theory it is said that it would solve all of the world’s problems.
“With a lower population there would be no need to worry about starvation,” Ethan.C.Owens, the theorist of the ECO’s theory told us, “And with smarter people there will be more efficient ideas and solutions to prevent pollution and preserve dying resources and species.”
Dr. Owens’ theory promised to solve all of the world’s major problems. The only problem is putting it into play and deciding if it would really work. A mass majority agreed with Dr.Owens’ solution. There was a few that said it was “mass murder” and “irrational”. Most of us believed him when he said it wasn’t murder. He was just putting the people that caused the most problems somewhere they could get what they needed. He called it Release.
That’s what got my curiosity. What is Release? We don’t know. Nobody seems to know what is is other than this paradise where anyone who doesn’t achieve the National’s standard for intelligence goes.
Turns out that I lived my whole life knowing everything, but I didn’t know anything at all. I can tell you how to solve a complicated physics problem, but I can’t tell you anything about the Nationals. All I know is that they are the leaders of Earth. They make the rules for our safety and take care of those in Release.
Like I said, nobody knows what happens in Release. That’s what attracted my curiosity. What really happens in Release?
