For this project, I was asked to explain the impact that social media has on society and myself. I used resources such as the "AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA?" QUIZ and current social media stats to help me gather information for this project.
I decided to take the "AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA?" QUIZ, in order to visualize the impact that social media has on me. After evaluating my results, I learned that I am fairly reliant on social media. The results stated,
You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?
After receiving the results from the quiz, I realized that I do spend a fair amount of time on social media, and I would like to take a tolerance break from all platforms. I would like to invest my energy into myself and the environment around me, rather than investing my energy into social media.
After reading "64% of Americans say social media have a mostly negative effect on the way things are going in the U.S. today" written by Brooke Auxier, I found an interesting statistic that addresses the comparison between American's who experience a positive impact vs. those who have a negative impact on their countries social media use.
This article provides both standpoints of whether or not social media use is beneficial for today's society. I chose this specific statistic because I believe social media use can be beneficial to society, but also how it could harmful.
I believe social media's impact has been both a positive and a negative effect on today's society. With social media, users can become more interactive and social with groups that share the same interests. This has led to a more connected world, where people can engage with one another and build connections. Social media can also lead to serious mental health issues such as tremendous stress, depression, and pressure to compare oneself to another. For now it is hard to say one outweighs the other, but I do believe social media has made a significant impact on today's society and generation.
After completing this project, I have learned that I am fairly reliant on social media and it negatively effects my ability to perform daily tasks. Also, U.S citizens are torn between whether or not social media has a positive/negative impact on the way things are going in this country today. 65 percent of American's believe social media displays fake news, hate/harassment, and impacts mental health that causes a negative effect on today's generation. 25 Percent of American's believe social media provides useful information to stay informed, make connections, and provide social movements that is beneficial for today's society.
