For this project, I was asked to complete CCBC's Cybersecurity Training course, and to research two different articles that addresses an issue of information security/cybersecurity found in the news. I was also tasked to evaluate the relevance and accuracy of each source.
This article reports a former NFL defensive back star, Earl Thomas III who was targeted of a $1.9 million identity theft scheme. Kevin J. Thompson is accused of using a fake driver's license obtaining a photo of Earl Thomas to open a bank account, and allegedly moved money from Thomas' accounts into the fraudulent one. Kevin J. Thompson was arrested in June due to identity theft, forgery, money laundering, credit card fraud, computer fraud and bank fraud charges. Identity theft refers to when someone wrongfully obtains someone else's personal information and uses it for their own benefit, typically for economic gain. To prevent Identity theft you should store documents that contain your personal information into a safe place only you can access, use multi-factor authentication, and read your account statements frequently to discuss any unknown activity that may be displayed.

Officials of the city Fort Lauderdale authorized a payment of $1.2 million to a scammer who appeared to be a legitimate invoice. Phishing attacks are the fraudulent acts of sending emails or other messages purporting to be honorable companies, in order to persuade individuals to disclose personal information. The city of Fort Lauderdale officials authorized the $1.2 million payment to be sent, then concluded that the request was fraudulent. This led the scammers to have full access to their victims' personal information. To prevent a phishing attack you should protect your accounts by using a multi-factor authentication, never click on a link in an email without hovering over the link to see if the destination is correct, and to not give your information out to an unsecured site. Be cautious of emails or text messages that may say that they've found suspicious activity upon your account, claim there's a problem with your account/ payment information, or say you're eligible for a free gift.

For this assignment, I was asked to complete the CCBC Cybersecurity Training. In order to receive this certificate, I was required to complete all assessments with 100% accuracy. CCBC's Cybersecurity Training has taught me the risks of how suspicious attachments can lead to phishing attacks, malware, and ransomware, as well as defensive measures that should be taken to protect yourself from a cyber attack.
After completing this project, I've learned that scammers can easily access your personal information just by a simple click of a button. Phishing attacks can be sent via emails or other messages posing to be a reputable company to lure you into responding or clicking on their message. Once an individual has interacted with the message in some way, the scammer can have access to personal data such as credit card numbers and passwords. I have also learned the extensive measures that I should take to protect myself from a cyber security attack such as using multi-factor authentication on my accounts, never click on a link in an email without hovering over it to see if the destination is correct, and to not give personal information out to an unsecured site.
