To the left is an old photo of my mom and I. She was essentially a single mother for the first few years of my life. She fought hard through our first trip around the sun to create bonding opportunities for her and me.
Postpartum is about learning, integration, and adjustment. Ideally this time would be reserved for the mother to be nurtured and restored. Bonding time for the new baby with mama and the family is crucial to forming lasting, healthy relationships. As a culture we are severely lacking in our support of welcoming new life and facilitating the transition during this sacred time. A postpartum doula can be a hopeful solution.
Supporting families through the postpartum period has become my favorite work. Coming into the home and providing stability and reassurance has proved to be as rewarding for me as the families that I work with. Services include, but are not limited to, light cleaning, laundry, food prep and light cooking, helping with all children, education on new born care, making sure mama gets a nap, and listening. That last one is invaluable I've found. Being able to talk to an adult who's been there as you weave your way through the postpartum period will bolster your mood and confidence.
