I am Kata Sebök, currently working as a postdoc at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna.
My academic interests include
(Preservice mathematics teachers') relationships with mathematics
Challenges and opportunities of teaching mathematics in university (teacher training)
Epistemology and sociology of the learning and teaching of mathematics
Philosophy (including ethics) of teaching as well as of research involving teachers and learners
History and philosophy of science of mathematics education research
In my doctoral thesis (available online here), I looked into the following question: "Can preservice mathematics teachers be trained to become more aware of mathematical aspects of typical teacher tasks and can this awareness retrospectively lead to a greater appreciation of their university-level mathematics education?"
After considering my results, I became interested in approaching the multi-layered phenomenon of preservice teachers' relationships with (university-level) mathematics both more broadly (by adopting a less hypothesis-driven, explorative stance) as well as more closely (by using less reductive, qualitative methods).
Following this new aim has opened up a wide range of relevant fields of study (see above) many of which I have just started scratching the surface of. I warmly invite anybody who thinks about similar topics and would like to exchange ideas or has any reading recommendations to contact me.
