East Biloxi, shaped by its coastal culture, faces
chronic flooding due to sea-level rise, overdevelopment,
and environmental neglect. Back Bay Boulevard, once meant to connect,
now acts as a barrier—disrupting natural water flow, isolating neighborhoods, and
worsening flood risks.
The East Biloxi Bayou Regeneration Project aims to replace this road with a resilient, community-focused
landscape that restores natural water systems and revitalizes the area. Led by local planners, students, and residents,
the project envisions a 1.5-mile trail with green space, play areas, a kayak launch, and educational features celebrating Mississippi’s ecology.
By removing a harmful piece of infrastructure, the plan introduces wetland buffers, living shorelines, and interconnected paths that reconnect communities, support native species, and attract green tourism—positioning East Biloxi as a model of cultural and ecological resilience.
