This weekend may have marked the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere, but it felt like the peak of summer across several countries in South America, where temperatures pushed above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil have all experienced record temperatures in september, with some all-time records at risk of falling as the heat continues into the week.

The very high temperatures are the result of a heat dome, which occurs when a ridge of high pressure builds over an area and stays for days or even weeks, trapping hot air. El Niño, a natural climate pattern that originates in the tropical Pacific Ocean, has also increased the heat, as has the underlying trend of human-caused global warming.

Este fin de semana puede haber marcado el comienzo de la primavera en el hemisferio sur, pero se sintió como el pico del verano en varios países de América del Sur, donde las temperaturas superaron los 40 grados Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

Perú, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina y Brasil han experimentado temperaturas récord en septiembre, y algunos récords históricos corren el riesgo de caer a medida que el calor continúa durante la semana. 

Las temperaturas muy altas son el resultado de una cúpula de calor, que se produce cuando una cresta de alta presión se acumula sobre un área y permanece durante días o incluso semanas, atrapando aire caliente. El Niño, un patrón climático natural que se origina en el Océano Pacífico tropical, también ha aumentado el calor, al igual que la tendencia subyacente del calentamiento global causado por el hombre.

Este sábado, un eclipse solar anular creará un brillante “anillo de fuego” en los cielos de todo el continente americano. Los astrónomos están animando a todos los que se encuentran dentro de la trayectoria del eclipse, de 201 kilómetros de ancho y que se extiende sobre América del Norte, Central y del Sur, a disfrutar de esta rara visión por última vez hasta 2046, pero solo si pueden hacerlo de forma segura. 

Y las gafas de sol no serán suficientes para proteger tus ojos en este evento celestial. El apodo de “anillo de fuego” proviene de la aparición de eclipses solares anulares. 

Son como eclipses solares totales, excepto que la Luna está en el punto más alejado de su órbita de la Tierra, por lo que no puede bloquear completamente el Sol. En cambio, la luz ardiente del Sol rodea la sombra de la Luna, creando el llamado anillo de fuego.

This Saturday, an annular solar eclipse will create a brilliant “ring of fire” in the skies across the American continent. Astronomers are encouraging everyone within the eclipse path, which is 201 kilometers wide and extends over North, Central and South America, to enjoy this rare sight one last time until 2046, but only if they can do it safely.

And sunglasses will not be enough to protect your eyes in this celestial event. The nickname “ring of fire” comes from the appearance of annular solar eclipses.

They are like total solar eclipses, except that the Moon is at the farthest point in its orbit from the Earth, so it cannot completely block the Sun. Instead, the Sun's fiery light surrounds the Moon's shadow, creating the called ring of fire.
