Book Title: I am Perfectly Designed
Book Author: Karamo Brown (featuring Jason “Rachel” Brown)
Book Illustrator: Anoosha Syed
This book addresses: loving yourself as you are, life lessons
Potentially Tricky Vocabulary:
Designed: made or created
Questions to ask the student before reading:
What do you think it means to be “perfectly designed”?
Are there any life lessons that someone has taught you?
Historical context to give before reading:
Those who are older than us can teach us some good life lessons. The best of these life lessons are those that teach us kindness, and teach us to value ourselves.
(The questions to ask the student and historical content above are interconnected. The historical context is typically going to be a supplement to what your student might not know. Some students may already be knowledgeable about a subject, others may not know much yet. Pay attention to what your student already knows and share the historical context accordingly.)
While reading:
Keep an eye on your student’s body language to keep track of and check in on their understanding of the life lessons shared in this book. Ask if they understand/if they can tell you what it means and explain as needed.
After reading:
Did you have a favorite part of the book?
Do you have any special memories with anyone like the ones that the little boy has with his dad?
Read the author’s note in the back of the book to your student and have a short conversation about it.
Follow up activity (time permitting):
Have your student think of and choose a special memory that they share with someone like those shown in the book. Give an example of one from your own life and remember that it should be a small moment - something that doesn’t rely on privilege (like going abroad) and is relatable to the student. Your student should then write a sentence or two to describe the memory and then they may illustrate it. If your student can remember any life lessons/advice they’ve gotten from the other person in the memory they chose, they may write that down as well.
