Questions to ask the student before reading:
Do you know where your name comes from?
Have you ever seen a tv show or movie that was set in another country? What were some of the characters’ names? (Think popular films like Frozen or Encanto)
Historical context to give before reading:
Different countries each have their own histories, and some speak different languages. A country’s history and language can influence the most popular names in that country.
(The questions to ask the student and historical content above are interconnected. The historical context is typically going to be a supplement to what your student might not know. Some students may already be knowledgeable about a subject, others may not know much yet. Pay attention to what your student already knows and share the historical context accordingly.)
While reading:
Help students with pronunciation of names and countries when stuck. If you are unsure, say Let’s learn together! and google how to pronounce it. Students may have questions about where countries are (or what a country is depending on the student’s age) so it may also be helpful to have a globe or global map in front of you as well!
After reading:
Did you learn any cool new names?
Which one and why?
Did you see any cool places that you want to visit?
Which one and why?
Follow up activity (time permitting):
Have the student create their own “page” for the book!
My name is (____), and my (friend’s/neighbor’s/sister’s etc) name is (_____).
We come from (____) and we are (____)!
Students can then draw a picture to accompany the caption.
Have the student match the first letters of the names and match the first letters of the country and adjective.
Example: My name is Emily and my aunt’s name is Elena. We are from Canada and we are courageous!
