School News & Class Spotlight

Have you ever wanted to learn how to become a good leader? Have you ever wanted to influence your school community? Get others’ seal of approval? Or maybe you just want to have a class where you can make new friends with students and teachers? Well, you can do all of the above with Leadership Class.

Leadership is all about learning how to have the power of a good leader to those around you and knowing what to do in a group. There are two leadership classes: Intro to Leadership and Advanced Leadership, which are both taught by Mrs. Stengele. She also runs the Kamiak ASB Activities Info and Updates Club and the Kamiak Student Council.

Leadership students of past and present have a lot to say about the class. In regards to the curriculum, Cole Blacksmith, senior class president, states, “For our curriculum, we focused on doing the seven habits [of highly effective people] we are doing right now and earlier this year… just a lot of stuff you can take and apply not just in high school, but beyond high school in your life. Because you can pick up a career in it, go to college and use it to relate to other people and just know how to live your best life.” He is referring to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a book written by Franklin Covey, which has adaptations for various age groups. It covers topics and tips such as setting and achieving goals that apply to daily life.

Blacksmith also noted, “You develop a stronger connection, not only in class but also just all throughout the school. You can go and help out students from another class.” Leadership teaches not just how to be a good student, but how to be a good person.

If you are not the type of person who enjoys the spotlight, that should not be a deterrent from joining. Tina Diep, who has taken the class before and is taking it right now, says, “I would tell [prospective students] to definitely join, because it is not as intimidating as it may seem. Yeah, we are really out there, but there are a lot of people who are in Leadership who still help but do not have to be the face of Leadership… There are still other jobs in the class that do not have to be spotlighted, and I think that everyone should join if they have the chance.”

There are plenty of other activities besides public speaking that help prepare for Kamiak events organized by participants in the class, such as making and posting flyers in school and contacting different teachers and companies. If you are interested in helping out at Kamiak and want to get behind the scenes of how all of the events work, Leadership is the class for you.

In short, Leadership is a fun and interesting class to take, with its own unique lessons that can be applied to everyday life beyond high school. Applications for Leadership are not available for another few months, so take your time in considering if this course is a good fit. If you would like to know more information on the topic, you can contact Mrs. Stengele on Schoology.

As we are in online school, keep in the spirit of being a good leader: make sure to continue being a good influence to those around you. Stay safe, Knights!
