"OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman finally admitted what researchers have been saying for years — that the artificial intelligence (AI) industry is heading for an energy crisis. " - By Kate Crawford in article titled 'Generative AI is guzzling water and energy' in Nature.com 22 Feb'24.
"Additionally, GPT-3 needs to “drink” (i.e., consume) a 500ml bottle of water for roughly 10-50 responses, depending on when and where it is deployed." - Observation by researchers UC Riverside, in paper titled 'Making AI Less “Thirsty”' 29 Oct'23.
"To put things into perspective, a single ChatGPT query requires 2.9 watt-hours of electricity, compared with 0.3 watt-hours for a Google search ... " in 'Generative AI Is Exhausting the Power Grid' 5th Aug'24.
Though the recent technological improvements have propelled not only scientific inquiry but also benefited normal users, the deployment and maintenance of systems on which these technologies are realized comes with a cost.
The workshop intends to shed light on various power/energy consumption issues of computing devices spanning IoT devices to data centers that are used to deploy various AI engines.
Workshop will benefit Faculty, PhD scholars, undergraduate students and industry practitioners by enhancing their knowledge and skills in these cutting-edge areas.
The hands-on training and simulation sessions will provide a unique learning experience, enabling participants to apply theoretical concepts to real-world problems.
