He chose the bunker for him and her. As the salesman put it, there would be no better way to spend eternity than with your significant other. It turned out that the “other” didn't come in the package, but then again, neither did batteries in toys and those weren't so hard to find. While he didn't quite have the “significant” other yet, he was sure to find her when the world erupted into rapid chaos. That significant other was sure to come, for when the waters turned to acid and the air to poisonous gas, his “her” would be thrown gently into his bunker alongside his ten jet jacuzzi, fully stocked bar, and 60 inch plasma flat screen. That day couldn’t come soon enough, the loan he took out was slowly building, the apocalypse would have to come soon in order for this sizable investment to be profitable. His house was probably being reclaimed by now so at least the loan sharks wouldn’t be able to find him, he was safe for now. He had a couple years worth of rations but only about a year of light left.
Loneliness was a concept he understood better than time. He wanted things now. He had no idea of time’s value. Just like the many faces he had seen, both passed him by steadily as he waited for the universe to toss something in his direction. At least, he thought, you could feel loneliness, with its steady grip, cold touch, and gummed bite. Loneliness was an anchor, an abyss, a statue of liberty on a gravesite, it grew bigger, but never moved, fastening itself like clams on a rocky coast. Time at least knew when it should leave. Time was more considerate, it gave ample amounts of planning.
Time at the very least led to things. In his case it could lead to two events. The apocalypse which would be his salvation or a cold future spent waiting. He ate quietly in the dark. In the restaurant a few miles down the road a couple slurped a milkshake and held hands. After the last drop was sucked up, the girl asked, what would you do if you had one day left on earth? The boy thought of what he would want to do and then said, “spend it with you.”
