Course Objective
Environmental governance refers to how societies and governments manage and restore the relationship between social and ecological systems. First, students will learn the role of diverse actors in promoting socio-environmental sustainability. Second, students explore the political, economic, and social dimensions of environmental governance and relevant approaches including regulatory, market-based, and voluntary approaches in this class. Then, students will analyze case studies to deepen their understanding of key concepts.
Evaluation Criteria
Attendance: 10%
In-class discussion: 15%
- Starting from 2nd week (after the drop and add), there will be 10-15 min discussion sessions.
- Fill in your discussion in the provided Google Document.
- Share your ideas with classmates.
Essay: 20%
- Topic: The effectiveness of a specific environmental policy measure (in Korea or your country) to engage or induce the public’s behavioral change
- Try to support your argument with your personal, specific experiences, or personal photos
- Back up your argument with proper references
- From your personal experience, what kinds of challenges did you experience? What promoted you to do?
- Length: Maximum: 1500 words excluding the references
- English only
- Avoid using Chat GPT. It can be detected by Turn-it in; If using Chat GPT, you need to indicate how you used it.
- Due: 4/8
Group presentation: 25% (20% presentation + 5% discussion)
- Conduct and present a case study of successful or unsuccessful environmental governance initiatives (The most recent case in 2023 will receive additional points.)
- Analyze the factors that contributed to the success or failure
- Lessons learned and best practices for future environmental governance

One (Final) exam: 30%

- Small, hand-writing cheating paper will be allowed.
