Course Objective
This 3-credit course is designed to provide a foundational understanding of the interplay and coevolution of social (human) systems and ecosystems based on empirical environmental events. It also deliberates the sustainable development perspectives and tries to draw basic principles and orientations for sustainable development and relevant policy measures. In addition, pertinent challenges in the path to sustainable development, such as environmental justice and the valuation of nature, will be discussed. This course aims to build students’ capacity to make reasonable and environmentally-sound decisions based on a basic understanding of sustainable development and related challenges.
Evaluation Criteria
Attendance: 10%
Your attendance during the drop/add period will not be accounted for the attendance.
Beyond the drop/add period, every attendance will be included in your grade. If you missed the classes more than 1/3, you would get F.
In-class participation: 20%
10% for group discussions; 5% for fish bank exercise in class; 5% for field trip participation
After the drop/add period, there will be 10-15 min discussion sessions. You can just chat casually with your team members and then share your discussions with the class.
Field trip participation is not obligatory. The students who cannot join the field trip will watch an environment-related documentary selected by the lectures and submit a 2-page essay.
Also, your active participation in the class (e.g., comments, questions, sharing your experiences) will be accounted for in your grade.
Group presentation: 20%
15 % for Presentation 15%; 5% for discussion and question
Students can choose one topic between ‘Human and environment interplay’ and ‘Environmental injustice’ and present your case study. Students are asked to give a ‘one-time’ presentation in the first or second half of the class.
Essay: 20%
The essay topic will be given to the students at the orientation.

Length: Maximum 1000 words excluding the references
English only
Final term: 30%
Previous year’s questions will be provided.
One hand-written cheating sheet (A4 size) will be allowed.
