This 3-credit course is designed to provide a foundational understanding of the interplay and coevolution of social (human) systems and ecosystems based on empirical environmental events. It also deliberates the sustainable development perspectives and tries to draw basic principles and orientations for sustainable development and relevant policy measures. In addition, pertinent challenges in the path to sustainable development, such as environmental justice and the valuation of nature, will be discussed. This course aims to build students’ capacity to make reasonable and environmentally-sound decisions based on a basic understanding of sustainable development and related challenges.
Environmental governance refers to how societies and governments manage and restore the relationship between social and ecological systems. First, students will learn the role of diverse actors in promoting socio-environmental sustainability. Second, students explore the political, economic, and social dimensions of environmental governance and relevant approaches, including regulatory, market-based, and voluntary approaches in this class. Then, students will analyze case studies to deepen their understanding of key concepts.
