Very sorry about the image quality, I moved computers and they didn't transfer over, so this is all I have left. The concepts were made around late 2024 to early 2025 as more of a brain exercise than anything. My favourite anime is Mononoke (2006), is a supernatural murder mystery about a medicine seller exorcising mononoke (and the occasional ayakashi) in Japan's Edo period and Meiji era. The whole thing is made to look like a traditional Japanese painting, its incredibly well made and executed I could talk about it forever... I also adore Mushishi (2005) another show about supernatural creatures, set in the exact same period. In this show, the protagonist mostly coexists with the mushi, helping those affected by them. All this talk of interesting supernatural Japanese creatures was put together with an amazing photography book I got, Abandoned Japan by Jordy Meow, and made me want to create some kind of supernatural mystery story set in abandoned locations.Â
I thought that no story I read really went into how the creatures are made. My original idea was that of an old lady who somehow weaves them into existence, but focussing on the abandoned buildings, I instead created a kind of personification of rewilding. I imagine she leads the spirits of the forest back into abandoned places, returning the nature to it.
A room concept on the left, and her facial features designing above. I originally wanted to make her excitable and innocent, but decided a more ancient, kind elder was more suitable.
After finishing the above, I honestly forgot about her since while I wanted to do something with her, I couldn't decide what. But I thankfully did come back to her when working on my portfolio! And made the piece on the right. One of my old ideas was to turn her into a zine, as I'd always wanted to make one. So I did. I placed a greater focus on illustrating abandoned buildings as I really enjoy intricate backgrounds, as well as any abdoned scenery, but she got to sneak in to.
I layered alcohol markers, images and poscas, making the pages slowly get more natural and green. I think I could've incorporated Bunny better, I didn't even draw any spirits, but maybe that's something for me to do another time.
The first page is marginally my favourite, based on an abandoned school building. I should've kept to the wide shots... next time. I'll do it next time.
Final Zine!
