BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS

This module introduces basic building construction and materials used in the construction of small to medium scale buildings. It focuses on developing understanding on the principle of the building elements which include the sub-structure and super structure and common construction materials such as concrete, masonry, timber, metal and glass 

This introductory project requires us to choose an architect and identify five architectural building materials and two structural building materials based on the chosen building. We're also required to study the ideas and concept behind the selection of the material. 

Individually, student need to choose an architect from the given list. From the chosen architect, the student needs to identify FIVE (5) architectural building materials and TWO (2) structural building materials based on the case study. Students are also to study on the ideas, concept and properties of the selected materials used in relation to the building design and construction. Building’s selection can be from any time or age. The compilation of the findings needs to be nicely composed in TWO (2) A3 size paper that include the following information: 

1. A brief background of the architect.
2. Historical background of the chosen building.
3. Clear images and information of FIVE (5) architectural building materials and TWO (2) structural building materials, respectively.
4. Relevant images of the chosen building (floor layout, elevations, three-dimensional perspective etc.).
5. Materials’ analysis and selection in relation to the building’s design concept/theme.
6. Overall conclusion on the choice and application of materials on the chosen building.

This assignment is designed to allow the students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding on building construction through drawings. It will emphasis more on detailing on building elements. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between design and technical knowledge. A success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of the design process. Hence, this assignment should be able to give the students on the importance of understanding the construction technical details and building design.
