The module introduces fundamental skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It engages different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings to prepare students with the skills required in design projects. These skills are taught through a series of freehand and constructed drawing held both outdoors and in the studio. The teaching and learning approach for the module will be lecture and tutorial based, with students engaging with blended learning experience during the lecture and tutorial session. The outline mode of delivery is blended learning approach, proportion of face-to-face and use of Online learning (TIMES). The module assessment will be an individual assignment involving a series of summative assessments.
Teaching Objectives
1. To introduce design communication skills through architectural graphics and modeling.
2. To develop skills in visualization and communication of architectural idea, space and form.
Module Learning Outcomes (MLO)
The objectives of the module are translated into a number of Module Learning Outcomes (MLO), mapped to Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO) and Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC).
Individually, student will produce a set of fundamental architectural graphics as a medium of communication that demonstrate their understanding of space and basic principles of architecture. Students are to observe and sketch spatial types in architecture and how the building form compliments the site context. Subsequently, expressions of different building details, texture, proportion and landscape setting of built environment. Subsequently, students explore visual composition.
T1 SELF EXPRESSION
T2 TONAL VALUES AND RENDERING
T3 LETTERING
T4 SCALE AND COLORING
For this project, students were to illustrate architectural forms and space through visualization and expression of space in the form of freehand drawing to create a movie poster.
Students were to be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired through the prior exercises performed in this class through the design of a movie poster.
Individually, students are going to produce 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional drawings of the Farnsworth House using orthographic projections in three phases manually and continuously. The purpose is to explore manual projection methods in architectural drawing emphasizing on architectural conventions, symbols and line quality. Besides, students will also explore office method projection and demonstrate the technical knowledge and use them as pictorial drawing in developing design concepts and generate solution to a design problem.
● Orthographic Projections (Plan, Elevation and Sections)
● Axonometric Projections
● One-Point and Two-Point Perspective Projections
PROJECT 2A: ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS
PROJECT 2B: AXONOMETRIC DRAWINGS
PROJECT 2C: PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS
For this final major project, we were to compose a presentation board that was integrated with our Studio I final project. This project depicts the entirety of our journey with our final Studio I model. This would culminate in creating a cohesive and captivating package based on our acquired skills and natural strengths.
First and foremost, I am grateful to have been under the tutelage of Ar. Shahrianne, as she was tremendously helpful to me throughout my Design Communication journey and her patience and understanding during every tutorial session enabled me to achieve tremendous growth in this module.
I am also grateful for Dr. Lia, as she was always considerate of the students' needs and made each learning session memorable.
Online learning was an interesting experience as well. Online lectures were convenient and the projects throughout the semester augmented my skills as an architect. Although I would have preferred being in class physically in order to get hands on tutorial sessions and also be able to interact with the tutors and my friends, everyone made the best out of the situation we had been forced into and I can only be thankful for the memories made in this module.
