Service in Community Engagement

I am currently volunteering to co-teach Afghan refugee learners with limited literacy in community settings in Muncie, Indiana. Since these learners have no prior schooling experience, we use a wide range of semiotic resources—including both textual and non-textual materials (images, diagrams, objects)—to support their English learning. Our teaching emphasizes literacy development in a community-based setting, with instruction focusing on (a) basic phonics, (b) grammar, and (c) vocabulary.

As a community-engaged partner, I also facilitate connections between K–12 Muncie Community Schools and BSU teacher candidates (pre-service teachers) pursuing TESOL certification and "English as a New Language" licensure.

Previously, I volunteered as a community language teacher for two years (2020–2022) with the Korean Conversation Table (KCT), a small community group. The program was not limited to university students at The Ohio State University but was open to anyone in Ohio. Learners came from diverse backgrounds, including high school students, soldiers, and university students.

Service to Profession

I exercise professional leadership by actively contributing to the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL). In this role, I have served as a co-coordinator of the Written Discourse strand, where I recruit reviewers and help make final acceptance decisions for conference proposals. Currently, I also serve as an appointed member of the AAAL Committee on Conference Connections, organizing mentoring events and personally mentoring graduate students. Previously, I contributed as a committee member of the Social Media branch of AAAL, helping to share organizational news and updates.
