Service in Community Engagement

I currently volunteer as an English teacher for adult Afghan refugee women with limited literacy in a community-based setting in Muncie, Indiana. Because many of these learners have little or no prior schooling, we draw on a wide range of semiotic resources, including textual and non-textual materials such as images, diagrams, and objects, to support their English learning. Our instruction is grounded in asset-based approaches, including culturally responsive teaching and translanguaging.

As a community-engaged partner, I also facilitate connections between K–12 Muncie Community Schools and BSU teacher candidates (pre-service teachers) pursuing TESOL certification and "English as a New Language" licensure.

Previously, I volunteered as a community language teacher for two years (2020–2022) with the Korean Conversation Table (KCT), a small community group. The program was not limited to university students at The Ohio State University but was open to anyone in Ohio. Learners came from diverse backgrounds, including high school students, soldiers, and university students.

Service to Profession

I exercise professional leadership by actively contributing to the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL). In this role, I have served as a co-coordinator of the Written Discourse strand, where I recruit reviewers and help make final acceptance decisions for conference proposals. Currently, I also serve as an appointed member of the AAAL Committee on Conference Connections, organizing mentoring events and personally mentoring graduate students. Previously, I contributed as a committee member of the Social Media branch of AAAL, helping to share organizational news and updates.
