“The fortunate traveler”
I was born in South Korea. In my childhood, it never occurred to me that my life would unfold this way—frequent migrations; first from Asia to Europe and then to North America. Many would say that I have been fortunate to be able to travel and study in various contexts. But, my status as a foreigner within most of the countries I have been educated has made my identity negotiation process complex. This background has enriched my perspectives as an applied linguist and educator.

Yoo (2022) is an autoethnographic book chapter sharing my journey as a multilingual speaker in the UK, the US, Singapore, and South Korea over 15 years. This piece reflects my efforts to address the benefits of being multilingual speakers as well as surfacing the challenges due to inequitable power relations among members of society.
