Justice Van History

While serving at a weekly Victoria street community BBQ in August 2018, I noticed the crowd was different each time. In conversation with some of the street community they made it clear that they could not come regularly due to their transient lifestyle. Risk of losing their spot or theft of their belongings restricted them in attending not only the weekly BBQ but any other service provider unless they stayed in close vicinity. Also, many were not prepared to go near shelters due to threat of violence/robbery, so they could not get food and other services.

The thought of being mobile and going to the community came about and was confirmed as I drove home, when a radio station I had on was discussing how a van changed and improved a local mission's outreach. A van was purchased and was stocked with food and drinks, plus items such as sleeping bags, clothing, tents, blankets and necessities such as tissues, batteries, flashlights, first-aid, etc. The van initially went out twice a week, but we now go out three times (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday).
