Hello, my name is Tsz Ching Tang (Julia ), and in this essay I’d like to share my story, my academic journey so far. I am originally from Hong Kong, and grew up in a strict academic environment. Students were expected to act perfectly and to devote all of their time to schooling, and as much as it wasn’t very fun at the time, I know that I now benefit from the strict regiment. At the age of 13, I left home alone to study in a boarding school near Brighton, England for three years. This school also shared the same strict academic environment, and throughout my time in England I acquired important study skills and work ethic that now benefit me in college.
Since that time, I did some traveling and ended up moving to Seattle to attend community college for 2 years. This was an amazing experience for me, because I had never experienced so much creative expression and freedom of thought as I had in America. I spent my time there doing a mix of English, Sociology, Psychology, and Environmental science, and I ended up really taking an interest in Psychology. Since that time I have made it my focus to take psychology courses and I want to work towards a masters degree in Psychology so that I can practice as a psychiatrist. I feel that I have an excellent emotional compass for my peers, and I would like to impact the world in a positive way by offering my skills through practicing psychology. UW Bothell has been a great place for me to learn about psychology and other aspects of communication with a diverse group of people.
I pride myself in the fact that I am trilingual, being fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. I think my language skills will bring me far in life, as I can interact with a wider pool of clients, peers, and people in general during my schooling and professional career, and with my acquired work ethic and responsible life-style, I am excited and hopeful about my future education and career .
