Julia Tang. “Community Organizing Reflection - Building Power and Taking Action” BIS 483: Community Organizing, Professor Charles R. Collins, Spring 2021.
This paper reflects on the experience working within an organization, and Tang discusses some of the challenges she faced concerning communication and problem-solving in a group context. She reflected on the failure and the disbanding of the organization and discussed the importance of a formal organizational structure. Throughout the course, Tang worked as a community organizer on women's issues related to voting.
As an IAS student, I recognize that the power dynamic of our society requires change, and building power is one of the main principles in Community Organizing. I decided to include this piece of reflection in my academic portfolio because the failure of my organization was a learning experience for me in many ways. I gained a wider understanding of how an organization is created and that it is an intricate and ever-evolving process. I appreciated the opportunity to discover my shortcomings and the chance to grow as a student and a community organizer.
