The teaching practice and management practical was carried out at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), within the Department of Dental Technology. KMTC is located approximately 3 kilometers from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), along Old Mbagathi Road, opposite Kenyatta National Hospital. Established in 1927, KMTC is one of the largest training institutions for healthcare professionals in Kenya, with over 41,000 students enrolled in various medical programs across the country.
The Department of Dental Technology is housed under the Faculty of Rehabilitative Sciences and offers training in dental prosthesis, orthodontics, and related fields. I was assigned to teach both theoretical and practical lessons in Crown and Bridge for Year One and Year Three students, as well as Science of Dental Materials for Year One. Some sessions were delivered physically in classroom and laboratory settings, while others were facilitated virtually using digital platforms and tools.
During the teaching practice, I facilitated learning through a variety of instructional strategies, including modified lectures, demonstrations, small group discussions, project-based learning, and inquiry-based approaches. Instructional media and tools used included laptops, LCD projectors, whiteboards, flip charts, printed materials, and real dental models, all of which made the lessons more engaging and interactive.My duties and responsibilities involved preparing and delivering course content, developing lesson plans, setting, moderating, and administering continuous assessments, marking and recording examination results, and providing academic support and mentorship to students. I also supervised student research projects and guided them in setting academic and career goals. My role required promoting student motivation by designing learning experiences that encouraged critical thinking, self-reflection, problem-solving, and collaborative learning, with the ultimate goal of nurturing well-rounded, responsible, and competent dental technologists.
As a Lecturer at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), I have been actively involved in training diploma students in Dental Technology. My teaching responsibilities span across core and specialized subjects, with a particular focus on removable and fixed prosthodontics, dental materials, and lab-based techniques.
I have delivered both physical and virtual lessons, using a variety of instructional strategies including interactive lectures, small group practical sessions, and one-on-one mentoring. I also played a key role in the development, moderation, administration, and marking of examinations, ensuring alignment with professional standards.
By integrating modern teaching tools such as projectors, dental lab equipment, and audiovisual media, I have created engaging and effective learning environments that support both theory and hands-on technical skill development.
