On the island of Puerto Rico, the city of San Juan was founded in 1521. Its name means 'rich port' in Spanish. Streets and buildings were designed so people could use wind and shadows to stay cool during hot days. In the late 1940s, the city began an effort to protect the Spanish architecture of the historic northwestern part of the city, Old San Juan. Today, San Juan has kept much of its old city walls and its old fort, Castillo San Felipe del Morro.
Do you think cities should try to protect their historic architecture? Why or why not? Can you give any examples in your town?
