Until the 1970s, computers were large, complex pieces of electronic equipment which were expensive. Large organizations like airlines, banks and laboratories used computers to solve difficult mathematical problems. Only specially-trained engineers and mathematicians were able to use computers. In the 1980s, personal computers became affordable and easy enough so that the general public could learn to use them in offices and in homes. Now ordinary people could benefit from the benefits of computing. Also, for the first time, artists could also start using computers in their work. Drawings and photographs could now be enhanced using software and digital tools.
