The SEA Teacher Program is designed to provide aspiring educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach effectively in diverse and cross-cultural environments. This initiative allows participants to gain firsthand experience in different educational systems, fostering professional growth and expanding global networks. Additionally, it serves as a platform for cultural exchange, deepening understanding of varied teaching practices among partner countries.
During my teaching practicum at SMA Negeri 1 Alalak as part of Batch 10 of the SEA Teacher Program, I witnessed the school’s dedication to academic excellence and student engagement. The institution is in the process of transitioning towards a student-centered approach, moving away from traditional teacher-led instruction. This shift promotes active learning, where students take an active role in their education, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This methodology closely aligns with the educational framework practiced in the Philippines, making my experience more insightful and relevant.
Beyond pedagogical insights, my practicum experience broadened my perspective on Indonesia’s education system and cultural values. Despite initial challenges, such as language barriers, the kindness and support of the faculty and students helped me adapt and communicate effectively. This experience honed my adaptability and strengthened my ability to work in a multicultural setting.
In conclusion, my practicum at SMA Negeri 1 Alalak was an invaluable experience that significantly contributed to my professional and personal growth. It reinforced my commitment to student-centered learning and highlighted the importance of cultural adaptability in education. This experience has equipped me with the skills and insights necessary to become a more effective educator, prepared to make a positive impact in diverse learning environments.
The practicum begins with classroom observations, allowing student-teachers to familiarize themselves with the teaching environment, student behaviors, and instructional methods used by cooperating teachers. This initial phase helps in understanding the dynamics of the classroom and the strategies employed in lesson delivery.
Following the observation phase, teaching assistance takes place, where practicum participants support classroom activities, assist students in their learning process, and collaborate with the mentor teachers. This step provides an opportunity to engage with students while gaining practical experience in managing classroom interactions.
Next, student-teachers proceed with lesson planning, carefully designing instructional strategies, selecting appropriate teaching materials, and structuring lessons to align with curriculum objectives. During this stage, mentor teachers offer valuable feedback and recommendations to refine lesson plans, ensuring they meet the learning needs of students.
Once lesson plans are finalized, the teaching practice phase begins, where practicum participants take full responsibility for conducting lessons. This hands-on experience allows them to apply their pedagogical knowledge, manage classroom discussions, and adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
The practicum culminates in a final demonstration teaching, where student-teachers showcase their acquired skills and effectiveness in delivering a structured lesson. This session is followed by evaluative feedback from mentor teachers, providing constructive insights into strengths and areas for improvement, ultimately helping refine teaching approaches for future professional growth.
My participation in the Batch 10 SEA Teacher Program, facilitated by the University of Northern Philippines, has been a transformative experience that has shaped me both professionally and personally. Being deployed to SMA Negeri 1 Alalak through my receiving university, Universitas Islam Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari, provided me with invaluable insights into the education system and teaching methodologies in Indonesia.
Professionally, this practicum allowed me to experience an international classroom setting, where I was exposed to diverse pedagogical approaches. Observing and implementing different teaching strategies has broadened my perspective and equipped me with adaptable techniques that I can apply in my future teaching career. Preparing and delivering structured lesson plans, integrating appropriate instructional materials, and engaging students in interactive learning activities have been significant milestones in my development as an educator.
Beyond professional growth, this experience has enhanced my social and academic skills. Interacting with students, fellow teachers, and school administrators from diverse backgrounds has improved my communication skills and confidence. Engaging in discussions with individuals who have different perspectives has allowed me to articulate my ideas more effectively and develop a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this practicum was the cultural exchange. Living and teaching in Indonesia gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in its traditions and educational values. Adapting to a new environment strengthened my resilience, adaptability, and cross-cultural understanding—essential attributes for a globally competent educator.

Undergoing a teaching practicum comes with its own set of challenges, and my experience at SMA Negeri 1 Alalak was no exception. One of the most significant hurdles I faced was the language barrier, which made communication with students and teachers difficult. Expressing my instructions clearly and ensuring that students fully understood the lessons required extra effort. Fortunately, with the help of my assigned buddies who acted as translators, I was able to bridge the gap and foster meaningful interactions in the classroom.
Another challenge was adapting to a new educational environment. Teaching in a foreign country meant adjusting to different classroom dynamics, instructional methods, and student behaviors. While this initially posed a challenge, I gradually became more comfortable by observing local teaching styles and incorporating them into my approach. This experience not only improved my adaptability but also broadened my perspective on diverse teaching methodologies.
Despite these challenges, I found that perseverance, patience, and a willingness to learn played a crucial role in overcoming obstacles. The support from my mentors, students, and fellow SEA Teachers helped me navigate difficulties and turn them into valuable learning experiences. These challenges ultimately strengthened my confidence as an educator, reinforcing my ability to adapt and thrive in diverse teaching environments.
