The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.Â
This is a Google slide presentation that I would update regularly throughout my student teaching semester at Thornwood High School. The slides each have a date and a Bell Ringer morning writing activity. The slides would be shown on the smartboard in front of the classroom on days that students would have a bell ringer writing prompt to start class.
By creating these slides and having a morning bell ringer for students, I show that I can "appropriately use a variety of formal and informal assessments" (7K), "effectively use appropriate technologies to conduct assessments" (7O), and "use assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes" (7J). The Google slides for my bell ringers show proof of this by being both formal and informal assessments in class based on the content of the prompt students will write about, I am using technology to conduct this assessment, and depending on the results of the writing prompts I can adjust my lesson plan for the day accordingly based on what is learned about my students from their responses to the writing prompts.
By regularly using bell ringers in the classroom, I have learned how to use technology to conduct formal and informal assessments in the classroom. I have also learned how to take the results from students prompts that occur at the start of class (we usually have a discussion afterwards regarding the writing prompts where students are asked to share their thoughts, ideas, and ask questions) and adjust my lesson for the day before continuing the class as necessary/needed.
This is a quiz that I created using Google Forms for my Edu 303: Education Psychology course at Trinity. The quiz concerns chapter 7 of our Educational Psychology textbook by Woolfolk. It contains 8 multiple choice questions and 2 short answer questions that are all at Bloom's Taxonomy application level or higher.
By creating this quiz, I show that I can "effectively use appropriate technologies to conduct assessments" (7O) and "appropriately use a variety of formal and informal assessments" (7K). This is in addition to "maintaining useful and accurate records of student work and performance" (7M) and "understanding measurement theory and assessment-related issues, such as validity, reliability, bias, and appropriate and accurate scoring" (7C) (the data from this quiz and my explanation of what that data all tells me can be found by clicking here). This quiz shows proof of this by being a formal assessment and that it is an assessment that uses appropriate technology to conduct with students.
By creating this quiz, I not only learned how to use Google Forms, but I also learned how to create a quiz that is reliable and valid. Through the use of Bloom's Taxonomy I was able to create a quiz that challenged students to think critically, apply their knowledge to scenarios, be creative, and show what they have learned versus just memorizing and repeating back information to me.
