Project based learning is a liberating exercise for students because they are not bound by traditional restrictions in classroom activities. One of the best ways to take advantage of project based learning is to couple it with a theme. One such theme, that I am keen on bringing into my teachings, is popular culture.
Students at the high school level are consuming pop culture on a daily basis, and I believe that they would appreciate combining something they love, with something we learn in class already. I am confident in my ability to make a lesson out of any SLO and pop culture reference. Some examples include: Stranger Things and density (see density tower left), from the general science curricula. Dustin Byfuglien body-checks and Newton’s second law, from the physics curricula. Pokemon and biodiversity from the general science and biology curricula.
