While the 7th grade curriculum focuses on laying a foundation in understanding the Elements of Art, 8th graders are tasked with taking a deeper dive into exploring the Principles of Design. All the building blocks of their elementary and prior middle school knowledge are utilized in project-based learning units that include clay sculpture, graphic design, illustration, and observational drawing. If we consider the Elements as the alphabet of Art, then understanding of the Principles helps students to create visual poetry with a clearer purpose and message.
