National Parks & Protected Areas Dr JONES' research interests include Nature-Based Tourism, Protected Area Management, Sustainability and Environmental Policy. After completing his PhD at the University of Tokyo, Tom has conducted interviews and visitor surveys on Mount Fuji and in the Japan Alps. Also more recently he joined projects on Wildlife Tourism in Asia-Pacific, Sustainability in the Aso Kuju National Park and Sea Turtle Conservation in Saiki CIty, Oita.
Meet the Prof!
Tom is Professor of Environmental Studies at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Beppu...the Onsen capital of Japan! His research interests range widely around Protected Area management, especially Wildlife & Nature-Based Tourism. The Jones seminar topics are aligned broadly around Environmental Policy, Circular Economy and Sustainability.
Originally from the UK, Tom came to Japan as an International Student. After completing his PhD at the University of Tokyo, he conducted visitor surveys on Mount Fuji and in the Japan Alps. Recent research projects have investigated Inbound Tourism at the Snow Monkeys and Takasakiyama Natural Zoo, one of Japan’s first and foremost monkey mountains.
