8C had the chance to talk to my daughter Jenny who lives in Germany. We have been talking about the Holocaust and in particular the story of Hans and Sophie Scholl and the White Rose. Jenny teaches at the university where the Scholls were arrested for spreading leaflets around which told of the atrocities of the concentration camps.
We have been working on one-pagers about the story Flowers for Algernon. Then we will display them on a Litfaßsäule - German word for advertising column. Students are designing their own with a partner.
The projects are fantastic! The students always rise to the expectations and beyond!
When I worked for Iowa State University Extension as a Youth Development Specialist, we used the Experiential Teaching Model - do, reflect, apply - for all of our teaching lessons. The model is very hands-on and focuses on doing an activity with only simple directions, talking about the activity itself and then applying it to the "world". In order to make sense out of reading and writing, students need to be able to connect with the information. Doing experiential activities is a good way to practice making connections.
"Experiential learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as "learning through reflection on doing". Hands-on learning is a form of experiential learning but does not necessarily involve students reflecting on their product."
Just a few quick snapshots at The Pizza Machine. We had a good time and it was a much needed break from the routine.
Thank you to 8C and their families for helping me celebrate my birthday. I was totally surprised and so appreciative.
