Ronald William Vayro had his first ride when finishing third on Kalymore, after being impeded three flights out, in the Flyaway Novices’ Selling Hurdle at Teesside Park (Stockton) on April 1, 1968.
It was on the same horse and at the same course that he had the only victory of his relatively brief riding career when Kalymore, owned and trained by Harry Walton at Gainford, near Darlington, was sent off the 6-4 favourite for the Cleveland Selling Hurdle on October 12, 1968. There were only four runners, two of which were 50-1 outsiders, and Kalymore beat the other, 13-8 chance Holt, by three lengths. The runner-up was ridden by amateur jockey Claude Berry, father of the successful Newmarket trainer John Berry.
Ron duly retained his association with Kalymore but the pair failed to make the frame in six subsequent outings, the last of which, at Southwell on June 9, 1969, was Ron’s final ride.
