Barry Venn

Born in Australia on May 1, 1942, Barry Hugh Venn came to England aged 6.

He spent eight years in various pony clubs and he represented them in many teams. During this time he undertook his riding instructor's course - firstly under Major Faudel Phillips then at Powderham Castle, Exeter under Captain Brian Young.

He competed at national level for seven years before a fascination for steeplechasing took over.

He rode as an amateur jockey for 23 years, winning the point to point champion chase at Newbury twice on 'Gravel Pits' and at Hereford on 'Stanhope Street'. He went on to win the final champion Hunter Chase, 'The Horse and Hound Cup' also on 'Stanhope Street' at Stratford.

He combined his riding activities with teaching throughout his riding career and was heavily involved with breaking, schooling, breeding, hunter trialling, eventing and showjumping.
