Lee Vickers

Jump jockey Lee Vickers was born on November 26, 1978. He started out with Andy Streeter before moving east to join Market Rasen trainer Michael Chapman, with whom he spent the remainder of his career, firstly as a conditional and then as stable jockey.

He enjoyed his best season in 2002/03, riding 14 winners, all of them trained by Chapman. They included two on Ei Ei in the Richard Davis Memorial Handicap Chase at Worcester on September 18 and the Tote Credit Handicap Hurdle at Huntingdon on December 12, 2002.

On July 21, 2006, Lee rode Dalriath for Chapman in a two-mile handicap chase at Southwell. Setting a breakneck pace, they drew clear after the tenth fence and were still five lengths up but tiring when the horse barely rose at the second last fence and fell heavily. Lee sustained two fractured vertebrae and underwent an operation at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham to have rods and screws inserted into his spine. The metalwork remained in his back for nine months and it was just over a year after the accident before he was able to resume riding.

He returned to ride six winners in the 2006/07 season, two in 07/08, five in 08/09, and two in his final season, 2009/2010. His last winner for Chapman was Royal Max in a Stratford juvenile novices’ hurdle on August 20, 2009.
