Jimmy Uttley

The son and grandson of farmers, Jimmy Uttley was born in Nelson, Lancashire, on May 3, 1937, and rode his first winner on Gold Double at Hurst Park on July 23, 1954.

He rode a number of winners on the Flat before weight problems forced him over the sticks.

He never rode over fences but became one of the greatest riders over hurdles.

He won the Champion Hurdle three times on Persian War: 1968, 1969 & 1970. On the same horse he also won the 1968 Schweppes Hurdle, the 1970 Irish Sweeps Hurdle, the 1967 Triumph Hurdle and the 1967 Victor Ludorum Hurdle.

He also won the 1968 County Handicap Hurdle on Jolly Signal and the 1968 Spa Hurdle on Young Ash Leaf.

In 14 seasons riding over hurdles, he never broke a bone. He retired in 1974.

Jimmy served his National service in the King's Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery.
