Edward Underdown

1908 - 1989


Charles Edward Underdown was born at Mayfair on December 3, 1908 and rode his first winner, Sea Worthy (pony racing) at Northolt Park in June, 1935.

Teddy Underdown was also a well-known actor, Among the films he appeared in were Beat The Devil, Tarka The Otter, The Avengers & Thunderball.

A tall, lean man, he rode under both rules and was joint champion amateur on the Flat with John Hislop in 1938.

He was described as 'a super gentleman'.

In 1955 he won the mile-and-a-half Thursby Amateur Riders' Handicap at Epsom on Stanley Wootton's Noholme. This race became the Moet & Chandon Silver Magnum in the 1960s, widely recognised as the 'Amateurs' Derby'.

Teddy died on December 19, 1989, aged 81. He left £106,284.
