Harry Ussher

Harry won the 1914 National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham on War Duke

(1882-1957)

Henry Ingham Ussher – better known as Harry Ussher – was born on March 31, 1882. He rode a total of 64 winners over jumps in Britain.

He rode and trained three winners at the 1912 National Hunt Meeting at Cheltenham, namely the Foxhunters’ on Merry Land; the Prestbury Handicap Chase on Ballyhackle, and the Jubilee Handicap Hurdle on Fleeting Prince.

His other major riding and training successes were the 1913 Grand Sefton Chase on Ballyhackle; and the 1914 National Hunt Chase on War Duke. In the latter race, the grey Silver Top had built up a 30-length lead but tired and was passed two out by War Duke, who went on to win easily.

Harry Ussher rode in four Grand Nationals, finishing tenth on Phaethon in 1909. He fell on the other three occasions, on Glenside in 1912, and on Ballyhackle in both 1913 and 1914.

He died at his home, Brackenstown House, Swords, Co Dublin, on July 30, 1957, aged 75.
