I am thrilled to begin an interdisciplinary project with members of the Art History department to help the St. Thomas community to develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the ways in which art and microbiology are connected. This project is generously funded by the College of Arts and Sciences to propel STEAM education forward and take advantage of the state-of-the-art Schoenecker Center. Read more about the three parts of the project below.
Agar Art Workshops in the Schoenecker Center will provide an opportunity for members of our community to use live microbes and petri dishes as the means for the creation of works of art. read more
A learning community will engage in readings, discussions, museum visits, and a workshop focused on microbiomes of art and their role in restoration and conservation.
Students will undertake a mentored research project focusing on the microbes present on works of art in our collections.
