There is currently a crisis in medicine - the alarming rise in bacterial infections that are resistant to treatment with current antibiotics. The occurrence of these “super-bugs” is directly related to the use and frequent over-use of antibiotics in human medicine and agriculture. University researchers and educators have responded and are on the hunt for new antibiotics in their labs and courses through Tiny Earth (TE) course-based research program. I am a collaborator with the TE project, and together with undergraduate students enrolled in my microbiology courses, we have identified over 300 bacterial isolates that produce antimicrobial compounds.
