Students’ learning is enhanced by clear cycles of practice, feedback, assessment, and reflection. This cycle gives students ownership of their education, as well as informs future instruction. Data is collected from formal and informal assessments to create valuable feedback for students. By creating a mixture of formative and summative assessments which allow students to demonstrate their proficiency in a variety of ways, teachers are able to see what each child can do. Assessment provides evidence that learners are moving towards content proficiency and are ready to move on to new material. Conferencing with students and teaching them how to use constructive feedback builds empowered learners who understand their goals and the paths needed to get there.
