Austin City Council 2026 Ballot Propositions
Shall the City Charter be amended to provide that the City Council appoints and removes the City Attorney?
The amendment creates a more direct democratic oversight by letting the elected City Council appoint the City Attorney rather than an un-elected City Manager.
The amendment expands the City Council's authority over legal staff, which could pressure the City Attorney to favor political interests over objective legal advice. It also departs from the Council-Manager form of government, which uses a professional manager to protect daily city operations from political influence.
Article V. - ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION
